Joseph Calasanctius

Joseph Calasanctius
(1556–1648)
   Philanthropist, Order Founder and Saint.
Joseph was born near Petralta de la Sal, Spain, and was educated at Lerida, Valencia and Alcalá. After ordination he settled in Rome where he devoted himself to the education of the poor. He founded the first free elementary school in Europe in 1597 and in 1602 he organised the Piarist Order of teachers. This was recognised as a congregation in 1617 and an order in 1621. However, in 1643 Joseph was put on trial, suspected of subversive activity and in 1646 the order was temporarily reduced to a federation of religious houses. Joseph himself was canonised in 1767 and was later declared ‘the heavenly patron of all Christian schools’.
